Software solution - a source of solution or added complexity ?

Very vital and pertinent point that i am debating with to arrive at my future course of career progression.
An ERP Business Process Mapping consultant for 8 years at the prime of my career, I started off on QAD's ERP solution called MFG/PRO. A medium sized ERP that I have thoroughly enjoyed working on and experimenting with to deliver customised solutions to all my clients. A journey full of learnings - self, business, skills.
I decided to take a deviation to SAP. Learnt it. Tried to practise it. Lost interest. Why?
  • Due credit to the evolved ERP, I had to struggle to learn and practise it as a novice instead of lead on something I knew well. It was a deterrent for sure.
  • The curious George in me seeked answers, but did not manage many intelligent responses in return. The whole crowd seems to be learning the monster.
  • The solution software is more complex to handle than the solution itself. So that is where I hit the nail on the hammer and I said , OK that is it. Doesn't gel with me. I want a software solution that caters as an exact fit with manageable ease, even though it could lack Hi-tech features.

So I am back to what I do best. SAP to MFG/PRO. Many industries have realised it too.
